Newspeak Prototype Release

October 28, 2009 Update

If you are downloading Newspeak for the first time, you need a starter pack. If you are upgrading from an older version, you only need the Newspeak image and documentation.

Starter packs

The starter packs include everything you need to get started with Newspeak: IDE, virtual machine and documentation.

  • Starter pack for Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) or later - Intel only
  • Starter pack for Linux
  • Starter pack for Windows (XP, Vista and 7 only)

Newspeak Virtual Machines

The Newspeak Virtual Machine (VM) is required to open a Newspeak image. Most people will want a starter pack (above) that includes a VM and everything else you need.

  • Newspeak Virtual Machine for Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) or later - Intel only
  • Newspeak Virtual Machine for Linux [ rpm | tar.gz ]
  • Newspeak Virtual Machine for Windows (XP, Vista and 7 only)

Older versions are available from Sourge Forge.

Licensing

The current prototype is based on Squeak, and contains code that is subject to the Squeak License, as well as the Newspeak sources, which are mostly under the Apache 2.0 license. More details about the licensing of this software are available on the license page.
